Kidneys serve 3 basic functions: remove excess fluid, filter out waste and excess electrolytes, and produce hormones. When a person is in kidney failure, their kidneys only only able to do a minimal amount of those 3 things.
Dialysis machines remove excess fluid and remove waste and excess electrolytes.
In dialysis the patient's blood is taken out of the body (2 cups worth at any one time) and put back in using 2 needles and bloodlines. It creates a loop of blood, and in the middle of that loop is the dialysis machine and a dialyzer. A dialyzer is a filter for the blood. Within the dialyzer, or filter, is where fluid and waste are removed.
Most patients have treatments 3 times a week for 4 hours each.

I would advise you to buy one: The Merck Manual.
It is one of the best medical book available at local stores for around INR250-300. There is a complete description on dialysis and other factors that will answer all your queries.
Before the person goes for dialysis it will be better that a through knowledge is gained about it. Once hooked to dialysis means hooked for life. It depends on how much damage has taken place on the kidneys...whether they are working 10%, 20%, 30% and so accordingly the doctor decides about dialysis. There are harmone therapy also which makes up the loss to some extent...but one should investigate throughly before going for dialysis, as it is very painful, lengthy and costly process.
God bless all...

Depends on the extent of the damage and how comprimised the renal function is. If there's no function, then you're looking at the full machine hookup 3-4 times weelky about 4-6 hours each session. If there's limited renal function then you could get by with peritoneal dialysis which is a lot less invasive and can be done at home without having to go to a dialysys center.
Good Luck!

blood is re-routed out of your body...into a machine that filters and cleans it ( in place of the kidneys)...and the blood is re-cycled back into your body.....
it is all your own blood......the machine just cleans it for you...
