I live in San Diego I think it is probably what you mean. It is overpriced, but if you look around there are some areas that are pretty reasonable.

I'd STRONGLY recommend the Tampa Bay Metro area in Florida!

The Tampa Bay Metro area is a metro area of about 3.5 million people. There are about 2 dozen cities and towns all right next to each other. The cultural diversity there easily compares to New York or Chicago.

In Tampa, you have large Cuban, Italian, German, Argentinian and many other communities. In St. Petersburg, they also have large Russian and Vietnamese communities. Dunedin has a large Scottish community. Tarpon Springs has a large Greek community.

For artistic value, the Tampa Bay area is WONDERFUL, particularly in downtown St. Petersburg and downtown Tampa or the Hyde Park/SoHo/Bayshore areas in Tampa. Go to http://www.visittampabay.com/ and http://www.stpete-clearwater.com/ to get an accurate depiction of what the area has to offer!

The cost of living in this area is quite inexpensive compared to other metropolitian areas nationwide. If you are looking to own your own home, check into Brandon, Bloomingdale, Riverview, Apollo Beach, Land 'O Lakes, North Tampa, Town & Country, Tarpon Springs, and Odessa (Land O' Lakes being the cheapest).

If you are looking to rent, try Clearwater, Brandon, North Tampa, Town & Country, & Citris Park. If you're feeling laid back, you may even want to consider renting a house/condo/apartment in one of the beach communities! The sunsets are GORGEOUS!

Go to http://homeseeker.tbo.com/ for more Bay Area relocation info.

By the way, you said you need a more open-minded community. Tampa Bay area has the largest Nudist community in the U.S. (no less than FIVE nudist resorts in the area, including the world's largest), one of the largest Gay/Lesbian communities in the U.S. (mostly in St. Petersburg, but also in Tampa), and the largest Swingers community in the U.S. (has about a dozen clubs/party houses).

Ybor City is Tampa's version of the French Quarter in New Orleans. There are lots of clubs to party in there. You can also party heavy in St. Petersburg in the Baywalk area, or along any of the beach communities (particularly Clearwater Beach).

People in this area don't care what you do with your life, as long as you're not harming someone.
