The reason is the ac unit discharges hot air out the back, not something you want trying to cool down a room. Yes, the drip tray does drip on some units, not a bigger. Yes, it will work if you put the ac on a stand by the open window. Just tape a cardboard box around the part that normally would be outside the window, and of course tape the box to the window so no bugs get in.

You can probably back it up against the opening, if you provide a drip tray to take the water outside and tape up the gaps so the hot air really does leave. The inch is a frustrating amount to miss by.
If it is your own window, you might consider taking out part of the frame, like the stop panel, to make it fit, too. Take it out carefully so it can be replaced.
Be sure it gets the right tilt--the one it would have had if it had fit properly into the window.

You have to have some way to vent the hot air that the heat exchanger in your ac collects from your room air. Theoretically, you could put it on the stand by your open window, then seal off the gaps between the ac and the window. And yes, you do need some where for the water taken from your moist indoor air to drain into.
Split systrm AC's have thr noisy ac part outside and the air exchanger in the wall off the room.
CAUTION: Thieves often enter homes by pulling window AC's out and then they go through the open window. Make sure your AC is totally "unmoveable" (Either pushed in - or pulled out)

I don't think you will get the best performance that way and you will have to get rid of the water and keep out intruders. Go get one of those units that sits on the floor and just has a "dryer" type hose that goes out the window. They work great. Or go buy a unit that fits the window.

yes it will get condensation build up and it will come out and make your hole floor wet!and what ever else is around it!an air conditioer pulss hot air out of the air and pushes it out the back!and send the cooled air out the front ,so really you will be defeating the purpose anyways! but you are in luck, they make a free standing air conditionernow that you can just stand in any room!look at home depot and walmart!and if you cant afford to by one out right you can put one on layaway at walmart!and at home depot you can go buy gift cards and save them up until you have enough to pay for one with all of the little gift cards!

Instead of a window type ac, go in for a split unit. You do not need a window or a hole in the wall to fix it.
