No. Never. It is considered one of the gravest sins in Islam. However if someone attacks you and wants to kill you then you are permitted to defend yourself. But this is permitted in all the legal systems of the world whether Islamic or Non-Islamic.
In all matters of life, Islam's message is peace. The religion says that there should be no use of force. If a person willingly and voluntarily accepts Islam from his own heart then right, otherwise nobody should force it upon him/her.
There are some people who want to project an image of Islam that is violent and bigoted. And there are people who want to do this to other religions too. They want to lead people, who do not know the true message, astray. These people will often quote things from dubious sources or will give incomplete information. The aim is to mislead.
In order to understand the true message, consult the original sources and talk to real experts. There are bigots among muslims also, just like there are a lot of bigots in other religions. My advice would be to stay away from them.
As for Islam, I can assure you that it is all love. And Islam's God is the same God that Christians and Jews worship. Muslim religion gives you complete freedom to either accept it or not. It is up to you. If you don't accept it, its OK. But it considered a duty in the Muslim religion to convey the message to everyone so that whoever wants to accept it can can do so. It is meant to be for the betterment of the whole of humanity.
