The ability to interact and be in control might have something to do with it. That, or maybe its the whole "steal cars in the 80s" thing.

For me the immersion factor is key.

Today's games are visually stimulating and fast paced.

Movies are not that interactive yet. (I believe that is coming) With games the player has control over the pace and in most cases the outcome.
