Very subjective question but fair!

For me its a toss up between three.

"American Pie" and/or "Vincent" by Don McClean show some of the most beautiful poetry of the 20th centrury.

Eric Bogle's "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" is not only beautiful poetry but is a frightening indictment of war.

If you stick me for ONE, I think I'll go with "Vincent"

I can't think right now, it's late...but the lyric that I love just this second is from Sam Philips "Wheel of the Broken voice", the last 2 lines :

silence and rage
the scars of a daughter
he gave me the knife
i held it in deep water

together we make the perfect question
there's never enough to go around
it's a cup with a hole and the love pours on the ground

wheel of the broken voice

talking to you hearing another
past covers truth and watches it smother

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

- john lennon "imagine"

So here we are tonight, you and me together
The storm outside, the fire is bright
And in your eyes I see whats on my mind
Youve got me wild, turned around inside
And then desire, see, is creeping up heavy inside here
And do you feel the same way as I do now
Now lets make this an evening
Lovers for a night, lovers for tonight
Stay here with me, love, tonight
Just for an evening
When we make our passion pictures
You and me twist up as secret creatures
And well stay here
Tommorrow go back to being friends

Go back to being friends, but tonight lets be lovers, we kiss and sweat
Well turn this better thing
To the best
Of all we can offer, just a rogue kiss
Tangled tongues and lips,
See me this way
Im turning and turning for you
Girl, just tonight

Float away here with me
An evening just wait and see
But tommorrow go back to your man
Im back to my world
And were back to being friends
Wait and see me,
Tonight lets do this thing
All we are is waisting hours until the
Sun comes up its all ours
On our way here
Tommorrow go back to being friends

Go back to being friends
Tonight lets be lovers, say you will
And hear me call, soft-spooken
Whispering love
A thing or two I have to say here
Tonight lets go all the way then
Love Ill see you

Just for this evening
Lets strip down, trip out at this
One evening starts with a kiss
Run away

And tommorrow
Back to being friends
Lovers...love...lovers
Just for tonight, one night...love you
And tommorrow say goodbye

There are many fantastic lyrics out there. I'm going to select one of my favourites, from the end of a Bob Dylan song called "Ballad In Plain D."

" Ah, my friends from the prison, they ask unto me,
"How good, how good does it feel to be free?"
And I answer them most mysteriously,
"Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?" "

As much as Dylan is generally overrated as a lyricist, he occasionally stumbles on something magnificent. This is an example of such magnificence.

I feel eyelashes on my cheek
And they lacerate my flesh
A pain so good
Put your hand in mine
Never let go
Never wake up 'cause I'm done with promises
I'm taking blood oaths
Feels likes you could kiss my imperfections
My imperfections away
And I would stand
Stand by your side until the sun turns the sky
All the colors I see in your eyes

I'll never need to see the sun again
There's enough light in your eyes to light up our little world
So take me, take my away
Kill me slowly, I'll never be the same

I swear to you, on everything I am
And I dedicate to you all that I have
And I promise you that I will stand right by your side
Forever and always until the day I die

The bite marks on my neck never felt so good
I'm losing control and it's all that I can do
Not to blackout and fall into lust with you
Your kisses infect me
The dark gift is loving you

And I feel immortal and I want to make you feel the same
So stand by me as we immolate
We can burn in each other's arms

"The glove compartment isn't accurately named, and everybody knows it."-- Death Cab for Cutie, Title and Registration

OR

"I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war if you can tell me something worth fighting for."-- Coldplay, Rush of Blood to the Head

OR

"I love it when you're here, but I'm better when you're gone."-- Rascal Flatts, In Pieces

Cleary, this is a difficult question because I could name tons more.
