In data processing or information processing, a Data Processor or Data Processing Unit or Data Processing System is a system which processes data which has been captured and encoded in a format recognizable by the data processing system or has been created and stored by another unit of an information processing system.

A data processor is a specialized component or form of an information processing (sub)system. Its chief difference is that it tends to perform a dedicated function (i.e., its program is not readily changeable). Its dedicated function is normally to perform some (intermediate) step of converting input ('raw' or unprocessed) data, or semi-processed information, in one form into a further or final form of information through a process called decoding / encoding or formatting or re-formatting or translation or data conversion before the information can be output from the data processor to a further step in the information processing system.

For the hardware data processing system, this information may be used to change the sequential states of a (hardware) machine called a computer. In all essential aspects, the hardware data processing unit is indistinguishable from a computer's central processing unit (CPU), i.e. the hardware data processing unit is just a dedicated computer. However, the hardware data processing unit is normally dedicated to the specific computer application of format translation.

A software code compiler (e.g., for Fortran or Algol) is an example of a software data processing system. The software data processing system makes use of a (general purpose) computer in order to complete its functions. A software data processing system is normally a standalone unit of software, in that its output can be directed to any number of other (not necessarily as yet identified) information processing (sub)systems.

Hi,
The formal definition of data processing involves four main elements.

1) INPUT. This is the first element. Input can be Names, Ages, Dates, Scores, XYZ coordinates for 3D graphics, electrical signals etc. This is sometimes called raw data.

2) PROCESSING. This is where the computer gets involved in churning the mixture of data. This is where adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, sorting takes place. Calculations can be adding hours and wages for a company, or calculating what a shadow will look like in an animated movie.

3) OUTPUT This is what the user sees. Reports, a digital piece of art, watching a dvd.

4 STORAGE a permanent place to keep data items

One way to describe Data Processing is to look at a recipe for Tacos.

First, you gather some raw ingredients: lettuce, tomatoes, meat, spices, taco shells, cheese. (INPUT)

Next, there is slicing, chopping, browning or frying etc. Then there is stirring, and simmering. (PROCESSING)

When the cooking process is complete then you assemble the tacos and you are done. (OUTPUT)

Leftovers and other ingredients are stored away. (STORAGE)

Okay, lets review it one more time said just a little differently.
When a computer is doing Data Processing it does something very similar to the recipe. You still have (INPUT)

Instead of ingredients you have Dates, Names, Ages, Scores, Prices, Times, Sentences, Paragraphs, Lines, Photos and Colors.

The (PROCESSING) could be calculating all the test scores for a class, or creating a picture, writing a letter to a loved one.

The (OUTPUT) could be printing the scores, a picture, or the printed letter to your loved one.

When you are done, the information can be put in (STORAGE) for later use.

in what program are you talking about data processing?

data processing is where you have some data in some form on a computer and then go through that data and go through it and do what you want to do with it.

if i am not wrong then u must be asking this question about computers yeah .... if I'm not wrong then when we put any information in our system its knowws as input n the result we get is known as output the time between input and output is known as processing ..... i.e u kno when u switch on light button that's input n when bulbs lit up its output but the fraction of time taken by wire to pass the current is processing yeah???? but if u r working in any organisation then data processing have diff meaning it means running the information of any project to get outcome out of it???
