Both the team performed well but french performed much better in the second half and extra times.
It doesn't mean Italy winning the word cup makes them the best team in the world. Penalties are just lottery to winning the world cup. Italy already winner of three time world cup had really hard time winning the matches against USA and Australia, it is shame for Italy. They are Just lucky to win this wold cup.

I'm happy that the men in blue got another WC, but honestly I prefer France in this championship!!! They really played far better in the second half of the game and they really came together extremely well which surprised many over Brazil!! Zadine was superb with his passes and the goal scoring opportunities he made should be the highlight of his world cup debut!! And, no I'm not a France supporter or Italy supporter for the world cup this year, so my view is quite objective.

I think France played a lot better through out the competiton. Italy Played really bad i mean Australia nearly beat them. Not that Australia is bad but considering their world ranking compared to Italys it was a disappointment for Italians. I think that Italy winning the world cup only proves that they won the world cup but not that they where the better team. How can you simply decide which one is better through a penalty shoot out? It's ridiculous.

Definitely Italy.
They have real solid sporting spirit: they work very hard, very versatile & multi-talent, and strong team spirit. Grosso, Cannavaro & Materazzi have equal chance as Toni and to score a goal in the match.

France was too focus on individual talent like Thuram, Zidane & Henry when there are 11 players on the field who have to work equally hard. In my opinion, Henry is a lazy striker who just wait around the opponent goal either to make a golden score or drop himself to claim for a penalty kick for Zidane to claim merits. (he is good at both)Then the French team lamented Zidane's dismissal had cost them the trophy but actually not. The 4th penalty kick that didnt went in was by Henry's substitute. So even if Zidane was in, the score will still be French 4- Italy 5.

Cheers!

I guess winners are always right. The match was definitively a draw, Italy scored 5 penalties out of 5, France 4 only.
I know many people don't guess as I do, but to me Zidane sending off wasn't the key factor in this match. Of course, networks are focused on Materazzi-Zidane fight, but this happens at 115' and its only effect was to have Zidane not eligible to shoot a penalty. He scored yet with a penalty at 7', and that was a highly risky shoot, trying to avoid any Buffon's save opportunity. Trezeguet shooted in the same way, and few centimeters let him to fail the kick.
Needs to say I'm Italian, Juventus fan and Zidane (and Trezeguet, Vieira, Thuram. Henry...) fan.
I guess this was a press event, not a real match event.

Technically both teams were highly skilled.
Before the final match, Italy was deserved as the better team in fitness. France was an aging team and Italy had one day more to recover. The match instead shows us a better France in second half.
In the early tournament, Italy had a better stage1 and a great match against Germany. France was poorly playing in stage1, and had 2 great match against Spain and Brasil.
Italy had great goalkeeper and defenders, also when the team was unimpressive (USA and AUS match).
France due its result mainly to classy players as Zidane and Trezeguet.

Finally I deserve Italy as more worthy than France.
1. Crowd, press, network pressure was highly as never seen before, because the 'football scandal' was involving Juventus, Milan, Lazio, Fiorentina, and a company of players' agents managed by coach Lippi's son Davide. A the start of the torunament many fans and columnists were calling Lippi and some players as Buffon as not worthy to play in Italy.
2. Lippi plays all preliminaries with his favorite attacking 4-3-1-2 tactic. When the key player Totti was injured on February (broken leg), he was replaced by Del Piero, and Italy wons other impressive match (Holland 3-1, Germany 4-1 on March). At the start of WC, Totti wasn't fully recovered and Del Piero wasn't convincing replacing him. Nesta - rated as one of the world best defenders - was seriously injured. Having Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Gattuso out of fitness or damaged by lesser injuries, and De Rossi banned for 4 match, Lippi finally needs to switch to a more defensive and unimpressive 4-4-1-1.
Needs to points it out that a Federal (National) team isn't so trained to play together as a Club teams. Lesser time to train tactics, schemes, movements. Often having a key-role player injured or out of fitness is a deadly dealing to a Fed team. Changing tactic formation has unpredictable results.
Lippi not only led the team to a winning final, but had those results:
21 players out of 23 send in the field in the tournament.
10 players to score a goal. 5 came from replacing.
Some players as Grosso were highly criticized form columnists as not skilled to play in Italy, their performance fades away any doubt.
Defensive line-up was the better in the tournament
3. A WC winner always has luck and circumstances. This happens in AUS match with an unfair penalty (after playing second half in 10 men by an unfair red card to Materazzi). And winning on penalties is always a lucky affair.
But I never seen an unlucky winner...
