The movie "187" with Samuel L. Jackson struck me like a truck.
It's about a teacher trying to teach high school in South Central Los Angeles.

Documentaries are good 'awakening movies'. Generally they are also educational. I saw a National Geographic on the Secret Service, and a show on Arlington - both of which I thought were great.

Check out the movie Paperclips.

Others: Edges of the Lord, Murderball, Bowling for Columbine.

Hmm...shocking, educating, and awakening;
I'd have to say: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Bubble Boy, Dude Where's My Car, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Cheerleader Ninja's, and From Justin to Kelly.

Those were some very enlightening Oscar quality films.

In The Face Of Evil. It is a movie about Ronald Reagan's life long desire to see communism exposed for what it was, what it did to people, and how it robbed them of their "self" and made them a pawn of the state. I was shocked by the shear courage he showed in standing up to evil, and confronting it head on, calling it what it was, and ultimately freeing millions of people from the iron curtain without firing a shot.
Most movies do nothing for me because they are not based on anything that actually happened, In The Face Of Evil is different. I highly recommend it.
By the way did you find Why We Fight to be anti- military? The trailer sure looked that way. I won't spend one dime on anything that is critical of a military that has freed billions of people. If it is fair, I might consider going to see it.
