With America becoming so concerned with tolerance and liking everyone for who they are do you think nationalism is dead. I want to hear from good old replublican elephants and democratic jacka----.

Wow... no need to ask who you voted for this last election.

Of course, nationalism isn't dead -- why do you think we do anything as a nation? Even humanitarian efforts are fueled by the fact that we see ourselves as better off than other countries, that we can afford to give to people we'll never meet, because darn it, we're just such great people. We still fight to spread democracy around the world because we believe our way of life is the way everyone else should live.

I don't think our society is exactly concerned with liking everyone for who they are. We're not sitting here chuckling and saying, "Oh, Osama, that scamp!" or "Did you hear what good old Kim Jong Il did the other day? He's a zany one, that Mr. Kim!" However, respecting and trying to understand other cultures is the first step towards international diplomacy -- maybe they do things differently where they live, and we shouldn't take offense at something they do just because it's different. And when we learn to work together, everybody benefits -- if you have better relations with other countries, maybe those countries will trade with you, and all the world's goods will have "Made in America" tags on them, instead of vice versa. Gotta think Big Picture when it comes to international relations. You can still be nationalistic and still be a good member of the world; pride in who you are and where you came from can be a good thing, if you know what to do with it.

I agree with you.

I blame universities for nurturing this kind of "I am sorry to be an American" attitude.
