"The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexander Dumas. The movie didn't do the novel justice. The book is packed with intriguing characters, from sympathetic to diabolical. The details are so lush and vivid. The action sequences keep you in a suspended state of adrenalin. Really, a fantastic read!

The book was originally written in French. It's critical to get a really good translation of it. The one I have was published by Oxford World Classics, edited by David Coward.

Not to offend anyone, but the Bible is the biggest selling book ever. Personnally, I put Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell at the top of novels. Stories would be Edgar Allen Poe. You can't pick just one if you love books.
