How can they have a rematch?

This is a publicity stunt more than anything else.

The entire stadium - and the entire world - saw the headbutt. The action was egregious, and I for one will not argue against Zidane's ejection from the match.

While I agree that there are rules questions in play, rules issues are determined by the sport's governing body, not by a court.

Games are not replayed because of a bad call. Bad calls happen every day around the world in every sport. As long as there is a human element to refereeing, there will consequently be (gasp!) human error. The only sanctionable characters are against the referee(s) in question and the players involved as appropriate.

The Cup is staying in Rome unti 2010.

On top of that, any French court would lack proper juristiction in this case. The game was held by FIFA - an international organization headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland - in Olympiastadion Berlin.

Ciao Juventina.
The re-match and any other fantasies, are just fantasies for those who still have hard time to accept that ITALY is the WORLD CHAMPION.

The information given in the article and in the contorted lawyer's mind are COMPLETELY WRONG!!!

-----------> Zidane was ejected from the game NOT because the officials saw it on video BUT because the 4th Official (Cantalejo) have directly seen the head-butt (FIFA have reported so, and all the media around the world have reported so, and everybody knows so, everyone but the stupid lawyer)

Some sources for people that are not informed:

"...But FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren said: "The fourth referee saw the incident with his own eyes and told the referee and the assistant referee directly though their headsets."
FIFA say although the fifth official does have a TV monitor, he is not permitted to intervene, and the fourth official has no access to video replays...."
From http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/worldcup2006.html?in_page_id=1892&in_article_id=394938
and from http://wc2006.telegraph.co.uk/Document.aspx?id=C9C390E6-0AC1-4552-8AC9-B18E74910E69

"...Cantalejo told Spanish radio: "I saw it happen live, I didn't invent anything.
"The ball was elsewhere and that was where the referee was looking. I always tell my fourth official to watch the players because things can happen...."
From http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2006/teams/france/5168290.stm

"..."The incident was directly observed (ie, without the use of a monitor) by fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo (of Spain) from his position at the pitchside, who informed the referee and his assistants through the communications system," FIFA said..."
From http://www.abc.net.au/sport/content/200607/s1684222.htm

And so on... but is it woth?
In meantime, whoever want to see France attempting to win the World Cup, they have to wait 4 years, because the trophy is in Italy.

players, coaches etc. challenge stuff like this all of the time. if it is decided that a referee did not follow the laws of the game the match can be replayed. the only calls that cannot be overturned are judgment calls made by the referee. therefore, if the forth official did not actually see what happened, AND he used video evidence to have Zidane sent off, the game will have to be replayed and the referee will likely be sanctioned by FIFA.

in sports when there is a bad call by an official it is usually made up with a bad call the other way. 1. this was not a bad call 2. the call that allowed the penalty kick with in the first 10 min that allowed France to score was a bogus call. He should feel lucky that he scored in his final game and get over it he is retired and if they played again Italy would still win

Hi Juventina-
I am so tired of all the attention being put on Zidane and France. Italia won-end of story-that is where the focus and celebration is located. The rest is just an extension of a poor loser mentality.
Buona Notte

hello Juventina
Sicuramente ci sara qualche giudice francese che vorrebbe indagare sui caso, e magari sperare di togliere la coppa agli italiani...ma invece di preoccuarci di queste cose, mi preoccuperei di quello che ha detto Calderoli...bye

there are surely some French judges who wish to investigate that case, and even hoping to take the world cup from the Italians, but instead of being worried of those things, it had better analyse what Calderoli said..bye

Sorry if my Italian is not up to par yet.

Yeah, I heard that. It's really pathetic, especially because Fifa officially stated that the side referee hadn't seen the incident on video.
