Taj Mahal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal (Hindi: ताज महल, Persian, Urdu: تاج محل), is a monument located in Agra in India, constructed between 1631 and 1654 by a workforce of 20,000. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned its construction as a mausoleum for his favourite wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, who is better known as Mumtaz Mahal.

The Taj Mahal (sometimes called "the Taj") is generally considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements of Islamic architecture[1], Indian, Persian architecture and Turkish architecture[2] [3]. The Taj Mahal has achieved special note because of the romance of its inspiration. While the white domed marble mausoleum is the most familiar part of the monument, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures.

Somdbody has already answered the questioned and stated that the Taj was built by the Mughal Emperior Shah Jehan in memorium of his consort Mumtaj Mahal. The bodies of both the King (and not his son as stated by somebidy) and the Queen have been interned here.

There is a pathetic sequal to the construction. The architech was one Musa ffom Iran. After the construction was over the Badshah feared that the architech may consider another and perhaps better building for somebody else. He wanted to chop of his hands. When the architect came to know it he was very angry and wanted to teach the king a lesson of his life. He agreed to the king's proposal (rather order) but said that before doing this he would like to correct a slight mistake that has remained . Badshah r eadily agreed. After doing what he had to do he presented himelf before the king and had his hands cut off. However, in the next monsoon it was obsered that thebuilding has developed a leakage and the leakage was so pointed that when it rained drop after drop of water percolated through the construction and fell directly on the 'kabr' of Mumtaz Mahal. The king was upset and requested the architech to set right the leakage. He expressed his inability to do so as he had no hands. The king brought architects from all over but nobody was able to derect the source much less repair the leakage. The building still leaks. Obviously Musa , as a measure to punish the ungratefuolness of the Emperor had taken this revenge.

They say the building broght bad luck for the king who was soon after deposed and his youngest son Aurangzeb ascended the throne. He imprisoned the old man in the Agra Fort in a room facing the Taj from where to his last day the king would sit forlornly watching the Taj till his death. It is said that with the construction of the Taj the fate of Shah Jehan went down.Under advice from the soothsayers he undertook the constructing of another Taj but with black marbles opposite the Taj. He could never complete it as he was deposed though the incomplete construction still stands. Nobody ever thought of completing it because the Mughal sultanate went from bad to worse thereafter. During the early British period Lord Curzon
had planned to auction the costly marble of the Taj on account of paucity of funds and had also adversised accordngly. But this did not come to pass as there were strong protests both from Muslims and Hindus.
That is the popular version. It also tells that the work was foing for years and years and had cost quite a tidy sum. Strangely, however, none of the Mughal records contain any accoun of such a huge expenditure, even though other sundry expences were regularly recorded. There is no independent confirmation of the construction going on all these years elsewhere.People say that the Taj Mahal was actually a Hinde temple Tejo Mahal(House of Light) which was converted into a mausoleum by the king with marginal modifications.(Dr. P.N.Oak, Historian)
