Hotmail used to work with Outlook Express for FREE, As I don't have it anymore I don't know if it still works, GMail has setup instructions to work with it, but that might become a pay option down the road, like Yahoo did.
Yahoo works with Outlook Express, but you have to pay 19.99 a year for POP3 Access.

In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
Use the following information to complete the Internet Connection Wizard:
On the Internet E-mail Address page, click the option I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use. Type in your Hotmail address.
On the E-mail Server Name page, click HTTP in the My incoming mail server is ... box.
In the box My HTTP service provider is, click Hotmail. No other information should be entered on this page.
Follow the remaining instructions to finish the wizard.
Note:
If several members of your household have Hotmail accounts, you can add those accounts to Outlook Express. Or you can create multiple identities in Outlook Express to keep each account private. On the Help menu, click Contents and Index. On the Index tab, type identities. Click an Identities subentry, and then click Display to see the topic.
Yahoo mail is similar.

I don't remember hotmail ever working, but I may be wrong. One of the best is Gmail, you need an invite. If you want an invite, just PM by clicking on my name, and send me your e-mail address. I'd gladly send you one!
