As part of my partner's employement with a large 3 letter phone company, we used to get reimbursed for DirecTV, so we had directv, they were great, hardly ever went out (occasional heavy rain storm or heavy snowstorm would kill it). They said 3 letter phone company joined with Dish Network, so we switched to them to get our employee discount. Service was the same, but their DVR was crap compared to the DirecTivo DVR, so we switched back to DirecTV and paid that ourself. Finally after waiting forever for said company to reimburse us for our local phone service and high speed internet, we found it cheaper to go with TimeWarner Cable's ALL-IN-ONE service for 99 bux a month so we stripped down our telephone line so we don't loose our concession, ditched DSL, and dropped DirecTV to get Digital Phone Service, Cable TV Service, and RoadRunner High Speed Internet all for 99 bux [ Price locked in for 2 years without a contract!].

Haven't had a problem (short of last week's storm that took out a tree that knocked the cable line down and thus killed our Digital Phone, Cable, and RR [ but we still had our local phone service still]) and we are saving money, sure their DVR is NOT as good as TIVO, but I'm holding out on the new Series 3 Tivo that might be in development now.

In any case, I'd say go with whatever is the cheapest for you in your area. Service is pretty much the same for all 3, and roughly costs the same, but you might get a better PACKAGE deal if offered in your area.

I have had both and i prefer DirecTV because channel surfing is easier and as far as i can tell there are just more options with DirecTV. The only real downside to any kind of sat. tv is when it rains sometimes you loose signal and have to wait for the rain to lighten up to be able to watch the tub again.

Cable! Satellite goes out whenever the wind barely blows (yes, even when professionally installed). Also, I get the EXACT SAME CHANNELS with Cable, PLUS local channels, for less than half the Satellite bill.
