they are realitivly good i know that toyota pirus has a 60 city and 55 highway rating but the major problem is with the battery cells if you live in a hilly area the car cannot decide weather to use the electric motor or the combustion motor and usually what happens is that the electric motor kicks in but is not powerfull enought to make it up hills (mountian areas) so you end up burning up your power cell which you need to then have replaced and that costs more than the actual car they are good for co2 omissions but all and all they have their ups and downs

I own a Honda Civic Hybrind (2005) and love it. It averages around 40 mpg, and I get between 400 and 600 miles per tank. If you drive slower speeds with lots of stops, it uses more of the battery. When you drive on the highway, it uses more gas. It all depends on how you drive everyday. Im not sure about theToyota Prius, its hybrid is different than Honda's I believe. But I definitely think its worth it! I also own a 1998 Ford Taurus, and this civic is much better on gas than that is! Its roomy too... 4 adults fit comfortably.

The hybrid really shines in the urban setting. If you do a lot of highway driving, you are better off just getting a regular fuel efficient car.

get a toyota camery or some other GAS ONLY vehicle. hybreds cost too much to justify buying them. you can get a camery for somewhere around 12,000 (which is about 8,000 less than the cheapest hybred)
you will have:
better reliability
cheaper initial cost
better performance
cheaper cost of repair
oh yeah, or get a VW bug, they get about 44 mpg

Good, but not as spectacular as advertised.
