The doctors tend to say 3 at most, as your abdomen grows weaker with each one, the scarring, and you risk tearing in later pregnancies. One of my friends had 5 children, all c-sections, and the last pregnancy did cause her a great deal of problems because of the scars. She did experience some slight tearing of tissue as well because of all the scarring (she used to joke and say we could play tic-tac-toe on her belly - of course we never did). After the 5th child (actually after the third and the fourth as well), the doctor recommended that she get her tubes tied but she refused to do so. Her hubby said that was it as he saw how much of a health risk she was taking - and got a vasectomy against her wishes. He wanted to be a husband, not a widower. She actually wanted 3 more children, even though each one did cause a greater health risk to her. She has never really recovered fully from the last c-section and has numbness and totally weak walls now, also she gets pains at times. the doctor said it is because she had too many c-sections - after the 2nd one she began having a tiny bit of trouble, after the 3rd more, after the fourth it was really risky, and then after the 5th it took over a year for enough healing for the doctor to feel she would eventually heal all the way - even if it was not like it should be. Her kids are 21, 20, 18, 16, and 14 now - and the numbness and pain have never gone away.

What are you asking, specifically? If a woman has a c-section (I guess you won't be having any if Erinn is right), the doctor should also perform a tubal ligation to prevent her from having any more kids? Because as I understand things, if a woman requires a c-section (that's 2 for me), then there is an increased chance that she will need to have that procedure again if she has any more children.

The number of C-sections a Women can have depends on her own health and sitution. It is something that needs to be discussed with her doctor. People do have three-four c-sections without any problems. I am not sure the number at which Physicans feel it is unsafe or unhealthy.

If a woman has a c-section then she is at higher risk for having another c-section with the next pregnancy. There is no specific number, it just depends on the number of pregnancies she has. However, every time someone has abdominal surgery, it increases their risk for complications such as bowel obstruction, adhesion's, and scar tissue.

As many as they need. After giving birth via c-sec, the general rule of thumb is once a c-section, always a c-section. Although it is becomming more common, it is unlikely to get a doctor who will deliver a VBAC baby. VBAC is vaginal birth after c-section, and many times there are complications with this. This is why once you have one, you most likely will never again deliver vaginally. There really is no quota to meet.

my friend had 3. she wanted to have more babies but the doc wouldn't allow her anymore because of the risks. so with the husband's consent, they performed a ligation on her, much to ger dismay.
