My wife has seizures about 1-2 times a month. She is taking medicine for it. Does anyone know if it causes either memory loss or brain damage. Over the years, it seems like she is no longer as sharp as she use to be.

Yes, I have epilepsy and seizures definitely cause damage. The more synaptic cascading that takes place the easier it is to happen again. It's like water carving a channel out of the soil, the more water the deeper the channel.

I experienced zombie-head (an overall dulling of cognitive function) but I believe this was due more to the dilantin I was taking than to the seizures themselves, as I've been off meds for a few years and can finally think clearly again.

So yes, the more seizures you have the easier it is to seize the next time and something--either seizures or meds--causes cognitive dampening.

I'm not 100% sure on this...but from my experience it seems to be the other way around...brain damage causing the epilepsy. However - memory loss is not abnormal, especially short term memory...how old is your wife?? some of what you're noticed could possibly be age related or even related to the anti-seizure meds she's on. Next time she has a Dr's appt, bring this question up to the doc.

I have epilepsy, was born with it and started having the seizures when i was 13!!
but it does mess up some parts of your mental abilities, memory yes especially that. and Im slower than I used to be, mentally that is. But it made me a better person :P

If she can have her take vitimans because medicines can suck those that she needs outta her body.

also, here this is a VERY good site to go to for epilepsy !!!

www.epilepsy.com

Good luck,

and it does not cause brain damage as far as I know, just if she hits her head somewhere really bad.
And remember, dont treat her like shes handicapped unless she wants to ok?
Cuz I hate that people do that with me :P

again Good Luck!

It's hard to pinpoint the causality on this one.

There are cases in which brain damage causes suscseptibility to seizure, and cases in which seizure causes brain damage.

There is research, however, which does point to a decrease in cognitive function in certain epileptics. However, there are questions as to whether this is due to epilepsy or the drugs which treat it.
