i've read about this, A DIAMOND is not valuable because it's rare, it is valuable because it can last forever if it's well taken care of. Man! we have so much diamonds to give each and everyone around the world their own.:)

demand...sort of. those who control the diamond industries (there are very few) are able to determine the market price of a diamond. Yes diamonds are rare to an extent, but they could also be a lot more widely available if the powers that be decided, but that of course would make less money for the people at Zales. Mmmm capitalism

Becuase of the lack of supply on the open market. Debeers owns 90% of the worlds legal diamonds. They have warehouses in the U.K full of diamonds, but they only sell so many so they can keep the price artifically high. They are a monoploy. Industrail diamonds are very cheap, but since they are not natural they do not have the same allure.

Broadly speaking, because the diamond cartel monitors how many diamonds are mined yearly.
This guarantees that the demand will exceed the supply.

i've always wondered that

i guess because people think they are beautiful and they want to wear them
and maybe it has something to do with how it takes like 1000 years or something to turn coal into diamond

it is the only jewel that can glitter and sparkle in the dark and it can cut glass. The rest that the other people said is true too. The more carats the more its worth.
