i spent 2 weeks at a 2 with my first, 1 week at a 1 and then 2 weeks at a 2 and a half with my second and about a week at a 2 with my third before I went into active labor. it'll happen when it happens. by the way, when the hospital admits depends more on your doc and the hospital than everything else. there is no steadfast rule. for example, i had active labor contractions but was not dilated at all but was only 32 weeks along and I was admitted. i also was given the choice to go home and wait it out when labor stalled at 5 centimeters with my 2nd (which i did by the way because i was starving).

I was dilated for about 2 cm when I went to the Dr. office on Wednesday. I did not give birth until Monday. So you may a little longer. The hospital will keep you when your water breaks, or you have regular contractions. Time your contractions when the start to come on a regular basis it is time to go to the hospital.

You dilate when you have contractions. The hospital keeps you when your contractions are a certain time apart, not how much you are dilated. I am a slow dilator but had contractions close so they kept me. You never know when it will be. you could go anytime or you could wait a couple weeks. Only the baby knows.

You can't always wait for your water to break- mine never broke on it's own and I have 3 kids.

Well first of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!! Ok, now, on to my spiel. Each pregnancy is different and each person is different. It solely depends on your body. You will go into labor soon. How soon just depends on your own body. It could be tonight, or three weeks from now. You will feel the contractions, they may be mild, like gas pains, or you may go into hard labor right away. Again it depends on your body. Yes when you are dialated to a four is when hospitals generally have you admitted, some hospitals, it's at three. It depends on the hospital. If you are having contractions that are roughly five min apart from start to start, then you may go into the hospital, unless you are being induced, which depends on your ob/gyn. Right now, get off your feet, they will be so swollen if you don't. It sounds as if you will be in full active labor within a few days because right now you have that famous burst of energy just before going into labor that most of us moms have. So, just be patient, it will happen soon enough. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!! AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

With my first child, I went to the dr on a monday and was not dilated. I was at 38 weeks and the doctor gave me the option of having my membranes scraped. I had it done and then did a lot of walking. When I went back to the dr on that Thursday at 430 pm, I was dilated to 6. My doctor was astonished because I had not had any pain, just a little discomfort. I thought it was just gas. Well anyway, I had my son at 602 pm. With my second one, I went to dr on fri. not dilated. Sat. morning I woke up cranky as hell, started a fight w my husband, left for an hour and came back. My water broke at 130pm and I delivered at 246. My third, dr's were off by a few weeks. Went in for ultrasound at (we thought) 32 weeks. While laying down I started feeling extremely uncomfortable and had to sit up. After a few minutes, I laid back down and was immediately hit with an intense urge to push. I almost delivered in the elevator going upstairs. Apparently, my water had broke that morning in the shower. My fourth was pretty much the same as the second except he came a lot quicker. As I rolled over to get out of bed, my water broke. My husband took me straight to the hospital and I delivered 5 mins after getting there. Needless to say, I did them all naturally.
I guess I was lucky to have short relatively painless labors.

But, every woman is different so dont worry. Hopefully, you will have enough time. My sister was dilated to 3.5 for 3 weeks with her first and then she had a 23 hour labor.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but some women can be dilated for weeks before they deliver. my mom was dilated for nearly six weeks before i was born. i can understand your fear that you won't feel a strong contraction until you are dilated much further. i didn't have any painful contractions until i was dilated to about 8 cm and my water broke. this was the only time i was allowed to go into labor, so i don't have any other experiences to pass on. good luck with your last few days or so of pregnancy!

The hospital took me in at 1 1/2 but my water was already broke. That is a good time to go in. I was there for 13 hours before giving birth. My friend was sent home and the unthinkable happened because of the hospital's negligence. Trust your instincts. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! BY THE WAY!!!

It really just depends. I'm no doctor and all but my mom used to be an RN. It can take forever to dialate fully. I would just wait until ur water broke or you start having contractions. If you get too worried, then call ur doctor and ask. Good luck!

I was dialated to one over a month before I went into labor. The hospital kept me at 4.
