It is an instant recharge heater. It heats water immediately so there is no need to store it in a tank.

Actually tankless on-demand water heaters are quite energy efficient, as there is no loss of heat from storing hot water in a convnetional tank. They do draw a lot of energy (electricty, gas, or propane) when they are being used, but so does a tank-style water heater. The tankless water heater will use less energy becuase there is no thermal loss in the tank, but if you need a lot of volume of hot water, like for a family all having a shower in the morning, the tankless water heater can't keep up.

It is a device that heats the water as it passes through it elimating the need for a large vessel to store the water in.
Not very effective for whole house applications (they require a large amount of power to perform this task), but very effective in situations where you need to supply hot to a single fixture.
