Escalator means moving stairway. The stair way can move in either direction. Escalate, which is typically though of as "going up" or "raising" is actually from a Latin word which mean ladder. As you already know, you may go in either direction on a ladder ... you may climb up or you may climb down. That's probably why the word escalate (climb up or down) was modified and applied to the moving stairway.
