Be careful not to get it caught on anything. The person doing the piercing will give you instructions on how to care for your piercing. Good luck! PS It's better to soak it every so often in salt water...don't use alcohol or peroxide either...not a good idea. clean it daily as they will suggest with an antibacterial soap and dry it with a clean towel.

First Off Keep The Original Piercing In That He Uses Untill The Pain Stops, That Way You Will Know It Is Healed. As Well Know That It Will Be Tender And It Will Hurt Really Bad, If In A Few Weeks It Is Swelled And Has More/Same Tenderness As It Was Befor Then Chances Are It Might Be Infected. If It Has Pus Comming Out Of It. It May Be Mid Normal Depending On How Your Body Reacts With The Healing Process. Note Do Not Wear Long Belly Rings To Sleep In Ever Because They Will Most Likely Get Cought On Your Bed. Try Wear Low Cut Pants When You Do Decide To Wear A Long Dangley One So It Has Less Chance Getting Cought. Make Sure Not To Take It Out But Slide The Ring Up And Clean One Half Then Slide It Down And Clean The Other Half.. With Either Proxide Or Alocohol. Hope That Helped.

First and foremost, do your homework. I researched piercings for a few years on www.bmezine.com . You don't have to take that long in doing it - I'm just an indecisive person. You can look at images for free with a free trial and read user's stories, etc. Make sure it is something you really want. A piercing can close up but don't get if you don't want it.
Make sure the place is clean. The place should be clean, they should have all single-use needles (no piercing guns as they do not get cleaned well-enough), and they should be more than willing to show you how they sterilize everything. If they balk at it, go somewhere else. The piercer should wear gloves and keep everything sterile. Pretend you are in a doctor's office getting a shot - it should be that clean. There is always a risk of infection so do your homework on the proper aftercare and your piercer should be wiling to assist you if you feel there is something wrong. Keep the piercing clean, follow the instructions and you should enjoy it. If you don't like it, the piercer can remove the jewelery for you.
For a navel ring, do not let them use clamps. If they pierce using clamps, go somewhere else. I had one done that way and not only were the clamps extremely painful, they stretched the skin in such a way that the piercing was too tight and crooked. I recently had it redone without clamps. The piercer cna get a feel for your body shape and place the jewelery perfectly. And it hurt a lot less. trust me on this one. Do not use bactine, neosporin or peroxide. Clean twice a day with a mild antibacterial soap and use sea salt for soothing and rinsing. Good luck.
If you have other questions or want to know more aboiut my experiences, feel free to email or IM me on Yahoo. Same screenname.

Hey! Meelee_C gave you the best advice ever: salt water! Yes, the piercer should give you all the information you need, but it's great that you're asking others that have had their navels done. When I first got my piercing done, and this was 15 years ago (i've just carbon dated myself), I would get a small cup and put a pinch of salt in it and fill it with warm water. I'd cup my navel with the cup of solution and give it a few swishes. It feels really soothing so I highly recommend it. You'll definitely want to use Bacitracin (Neosporin), some antibiotic ointment, and apply a sparse amount to the jewelry, typically a ring when you first get pierced, and move the jewelry back and forth through the hole. Avoid swimming for a while, especially if you swim at any lakes. Real easy to get infected. Wear low rise jeans/pants. Keep in mind that this piercing takes the longest to heal because the area isn't always exposed to air and the skin of the navel is much more dense than in other piercable places. It took about nine months for my navel to heal. PS..Whatever you do, avoid bodily fluids near the area!!!

The piercer should give you this information, but what you want to do is clean the wound twice a day with sea salt or softsoap anti bacterial, and an antibiotic cream. You need to keep the wound free and clean of debris, avoid rubbing against clothing, and turn the metal hoop in the piercing so that it can move freely, if you leave it and don't move it, it can become attached and not be able to move. Do not clean it with alcohol until it is TOTALLY HEALED! Good luck, I've had my ears, belly button and nips pierced and belly button was the most painful.

I've not had mine done, but it's the same as any piercing - you have to keep the area clean and dry...with a mild cleansing solution (they will let you know what you can use). You'll also be checking daily for signs of infection (redness, swelling or drainage). For pain relief you can most likely use ice (sparingly) as well as some Tylenol or Ibuprofen. If you have other questions or concerns, ask the person doing your piercing BEFORE the piercing begins. Otherwise you might be too distracted to remember your questions afterwards.

GET IT DONE STANDING UP. Don't lay down when they do it! Your skin lays differently when you lay down, and even if they mark it, they can **** up. Thats what happened to me. :\ Granted, its not bad, but it's sideways just enough to the point that it annoys the **** outta me
Wash it w/ soap and water everyday, and move the ring/bar around so as to loosen things up in there. They should give you an antibacterial wash when you get it done.
Don't play w/ it! Your hands are dirty, and will put dirt in the peircing and it'll get infected. Mine didn't heal for months cause I kept doing that. It stayed infected and it pussed for god knows how long.
If they give you a ring, switch to a bar when you feel comfortable doing so. I found that the ring got caught on things and it moved around alot [I sleep on my stomatch sometimes] which irritates the peircing.....And when it would move, the outside of it would be dirty and get the dirt in the peircing...And then...infection. What a vicious cycle.
It's a peircing that needs alot of upkeep in the beginning. You'll love it when it's all over w/.
The 1st lady gave you a good suggestion: Use bactricin!
