Hmmm... I would start by doing an advanced search for "Linear Regression" and looking at some free materials to get a feel for the vocabulary...

then find a used book on Linear Regression... we have a "Half Price Books" store here that sells a lot of used text books too...

after you can understand what you are reading in Linear Regresson then you can study other types of predictive systems with curves instead of straight lines.
