I am a psychology major. I'm heading into my sophomore year and I have only taken two general psychology classes. I plan on either getting my Psy.D. or Ph.D. I am not 100% sure about the path that I would like to take but if I am leaning more towards working with abused/troubled children-young adults. Any suggestions to this question and anything else that has to do with this subject?

I have a masters degree in clinical psychology a bachelors in psychology and sociology and an associates in criminal justice... If i had to do it all over again i would look into a Nursing program with the minor or double major in Psychology... Hospitals are not going anywhere....However all the book knowledge you read about such as the emotional cycles, diagnosis and inner battles children, medications issues are only describe in text book situations.... its getting into the field and seeing the abuse and neglect the children are faced with and mostly know the resources that are out there. I work for a social services agency doing protective intake/ investigations.... the greatest strength is being honest with the kids...as far as classes go...Child development courses, Mental Health courses and don't be afraid to volunteer as a big brother/big sister... that is good way to understand today's youth.. try doing an internship with the social services or a youth group on anything related to children. Learn to listen to them and not just preach to them....and don't be afraid to ask the hard questions after a rapport is build..... Good Luck
