This is all coming from someone with a similar taste in music. Especially the Beatles.

Supergrass-feel good band with a sometime Beatle-esque sound. 'In it for the Money' is where you should start.
Band of Horses-greatest indie discovery this year. Very Shins-like
Small Faces-a lot of Robert Plant's influence came from Steve Marriott
The Sounds 'Dying To Say This To You'-straight to the point chic punk
The Doves-'Some Cities' is a great album but you must check out 'The Last Broadcast'
Kaiser Chiefs-great tunes from these guys
New Model Army-Both NMA & MOB are great post punk bands
Mission of Burma
Tegan & Sara-'So Jealous' was my favorite album of last year
The Monks-way ahead of their time
The Runaways-the Donna's of the 70s featuring teens Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Cherie Currie
T Rex or Tyrannosaurus Rex-so much more to T Rex than 'Bang a Gong'. You will be hooked. Start with 'The Slider'
Velvet Underground-Warhol's house band featuring Lou Reed & sometime's Nico. Very heavy stuff.
Pretty Things 'SF Sorrow'-This concept album reminds me a lot of Sgt. Peppers. There's even a song where the vocals are eeriely like J Lennon
The Zombies 'Odessey and Oracle'-This was to the Zombies what Sgt. Peppers was to the Beatles or Pet Sounds to the Beach Boys. Pure genius.
The Kinks - 'Arthur' or 'Village Green Preservation Society' are amazing albums if you haven't heard them.

The White Stripes are awesome, and have a sort of classic-rock feel to some of their earlier stuff. If you like indie stuff like Iron and Wine, I would suggest Cary Brothers, Ryan Adams, Eels, and The Shins. Some random bands that are good would be The Pixies, Violent Femmes, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
