I think that the role of a pastor or teacher is one to be taken very seriously. You are in some ways responsible for the souls of the people that you are "watching over" or teaching. This means that if you teach something, then you better be confident that it is of the Lord because there are very serious consequences for those who lead people astray. One just must be ever on the lookout for false teachers..those who claim to be furthering God's kingdom but are really just teaching lies and stirring up dissension.
I think whether or not authorities in the church can be trusted in based on discernment. In my experience, if your pastor reminds you of a used car salesman, he is probably a used car salesman.
