When I was younger, I spent a lot of time alone, drifting, broke, alienated... Then there was a ten-year marriage that was okay but kind of stressful (high-maintenance wife) and eventually degenerated into strife and divorce.

I kept a good enough attitude through it all and I liked my life well enough, but I figured life would always be a bit of a struggle. I didn't really see how or why things would ever have reason to change. Back then, I would have said that everyone's alone, fighting their own battles.

But in the last decade or so it seems like I stumbled into a patch of peace and contentment. Good marriage, job is smooth sailing, finances are in order... It probably has to do with the fact that I've hit middle age--I've finally figured out some of the answers.

Also, middle-aged people can just go up and talk to each other. It's like a club where we have nothing to prove to each other and can just approach each other and chat about the weather and how our day is going.

So now I would say that we're not alone. The world and the people around me seem more benign and accessible these days. I guess it's pretty much a matter of perspective.

Yes I do agree, and I will use myself as an example. I am a shy person unless I know a majority of the people around me, except for when I would be drunk. I believe that I can't reveal my true self to anyone because that is the thing that makes us truly an individual, we could have everyone around us that we love but feel all alone because those people think they know you but they don't know the true self that you really are

lifecircle9 has got the answer. loneliness can be overwhelming there is an enormous amount of individuals who choose to self-medicate by using drugs and/or alcohol whether or not they know they are choosing to use for that specific reason. total bummer because next comes addiction which can result in several ways and cause one to feel even more alone~completely horrible.

and... prescription drugs do something similar only they are legal. they work for some and not others. and the need for them definatly depends on the extent of the lonely feeling........bla bla bla k i'm done here i suppose:)

I agree with lifecircle9. We are alone because we live according to the scenario in our own heads.

We all have that inner self that needs to be protected. If it is protected too much and we hide in there it can be a serious problem which a lot of people treat with alcohol and drugs.

yes, you should look into solipsism. one can only know themselves.... A very existential idea. We all walk around and talk but live inside our own heads. We have a collective but this is only a culmination of ideas coming from others inside themselves.. a subject i like alot...
