Hey, there are a lot of choices out there. If you have the money, it probably is a better idea to go for better quality. And whether people laugh at you, you have to know your own self ! I've got a coworker who owns two Harleys, but he rides a Honda Metropolitan to work 'cause it gets 100 mpg, and he lives in town. Now there's a fellow secure in his manhood ! ( His wife bought it, but then never rode it, so he decided he might as well put it to good use! )
If you think you might ever need to go on a highway, they also make larger scooters that can handle those kinds of speeds. They 'only' get 60-80 mpg. The Suzuki Burgman 600 is an amazing piece of work. It has a trunk large enough for groceries, or two full helmets, and is happy at 70 mph !
Good luck, and have fun !
I'd also recommend taking a Motorcycle Safety Course, just the same. It helps to prepare you for the road, even if you aren't getting a faster scooter.

My older brother went through this a few short years ago. He said he was ready for a scooter, but I suspect it may have had something to do with his neighbor and friend selling one. It was an Aprilia, I believe, and under its serene if unusually shaped plastic body it held a single cylinder engine of 500cc displacement. Of course it could manage highway speed, and came with the full retinue of electric start, disk brakes, and suspension that had enough travel to handle serious weight and power. I asked him then, and I'll ask you now, what is it about the shape of a scooter you find so compelling? At even 150cc, you are looking at a machine that can drive you upwards of 60-70 miles per hour, more than enough to turn you into lifeless mush should things go afoul. The problem with scooters at any speed is that while they certainly have gotten better since the celebrated days of Lambretta or Piaggio (250cc two-stroke cuties from 1960s Italy), they still have small wheels, a decided source of instability. Combining small wheels with hard braking could make these irresistable ladybugs even dicier. I had two small scooters when I lived in Japan, and they were fun but, frankly, terrifying. So, if you like the feeling of wind-in-your-face, smile-about-your-lips, two-wheeled freedom, why not try something that offers more, shall we say, relative safety? If you can live with the idea of slightly different plastic cowling and footpegs instead of a floorboard, then a small motorcycle will suit both your needs, commuting and care-free weekend gad abouts. Please at least try both, and find for yourself on which you feel most comfortable. And, as for looks, remember that when you are riding your machine, whatever final configuration it takes, you can't actually see it. As a final note, I will say that my brother sold his Aprilia this past spring and bought a second-hand Yamaha motorcycle of similar displacement. It was, in a word, an epiphany, and he has never looked back. Stay alert, ride safely, and wear stylish protective wear, emphasis on protective.

I would recomend that you don't purchase a scooter from a websight. Almost all need more assembly then one guy can handle, unless he is a motorcycle mechanic. I own a Wildfire WF150-S I have no problems with this bike. However, I purchased it from a local dealer. He stands by the cycles he sales and is good about repairs. There are many, many different companys importing Chinese cycles. Some are made better then others. Mine is lime green and Harley guys will wave, the superbike guys just ignore you. Girls dig the scooters.

do a google search on Go-peds. I have one it goes about 18mi and hour. You can get one with off-road or on road tires. I need one with off-road tires because it is really easy to wreck and would be better if you could drive it in the grass. they are lots of fun.
