When you write songs, how do you do it? Write out a poem and then make a song out of it?

Do you worry about syllables or rythm? If so, are there patterns that are sometimes useful? Does it matter how it will be sang as long as it works and sounds good when you read it to yourself?

Is less and more precise lyrics better or more lyrics as if you were telling a story?

I will usually concentrate on the basic rythm that i will be using, and visualise the song being sung. Poems turned directily into songs work well only for certian styles of music, i wouldn't try it unless you were a reeeeeally good poet. It could sound a little too sorrowful .

If you're writing a song that only you will hear (or close personal friends) then it doesn't really matter whether or not it sounds good when you sing it. If you want to make the folks bob thier heads, then the song's lyrics have to relay the energy through rythm and syllabic usage as well as vocal infliction. Clever and witty banter is icing on the cake. Presentation is about 90% of the game.

Some of the most popular songs today have assinine lyrics, but a good beat. Listen to black eyed peas' latest album. Compared to their earlier stuff, you can see they have lost a lot of brain cells on tour. They use small words now, and do it without much poetic interpretation. But the Behind the Front album has got some really clever phrasing, and beautiful associations to boot..

To summarise I'd say consider your style. Stay away from using a lot of I's and You's in your lyrics. and keep it light and entertaining.
