I'm hoping it will rise above the racism. That would be great.
If you mean rise and dominate over the rest of the USA, I say not a chance. People in the north don't even think about junk like that. Southerners should grow up, stop the juvenile group mentality, rah-rah club realize that they lost the civil war a long time ago, and be Americans making the country great as a whole. Not separating and segregating.
Peace

I've lived in the South, the North, and on a different continent. Racism, ignorance, violence, judgmentalism... do not exist in a geographical location. They are in the hearts of individuals.
I am white. I live in the South. My son's best friend is black. I have friends who are black, white, Asian, Indian, South African, German, English, Latino, Philippino, Dutch.... When I lived in the "North" there was one black person in the entire town. And absolutely no one of other races. The people native to the area were racist to the extreme.
Maybe you need to remember the story about a man who moved to a town and asked of an old-timer:
"What sort of people live in this town?"
"Well, what sort of people lived in the town you came from," answered the old-timer.
"Oh, they were a bunch of stupid, unfriendly, lazy losers."
The old fellow responded, "Well, I think you'll find that the people in this town are about the same."
People who stereotype are the ones who will probably stay where they currently are - in the dumps.

How old are you ? Haven't taken history yet? The south rose again back in the early twentieth century with the successfulness of the motor car. Gasoline and other petroleum products made the south richer than ever. Also innovative new machines for harvesting crops was a big help in getting the farming industry back in gear also.
We are all part of one country. Why are you being so childish to knock a part of your country. Remember, every time that you vote in a national election YOU personally are partly responsible for the consequences of your candidates actions in regards to national policy which directly affects what is or what is not done in ALL parts of the country.

If you pay attention to the news, you'll find that very few homophobic or racist acts occur in the South. It's a fallacy.
