Although parents are just trying to do what's best for their kids (or what they think is best) kids don't want to be told what to do. They sometimes become rebellious out of sheer annoyance and anger at always being told what to do.

Not all teens rebel. Mine didn't. I think most do because they are trying to establish their own identity and they don 't feel that they are being taken seriously or listened to by their parents. I didn't have a problem with my kids because I respected them as individuals and we had open communication.

I think part of it is that they're SOOO insecure and all they want to do is to fit in. Their friends are more of a focus/pleasing than when they were kids where they were more parent focused/pleasing. You know they think they know it all anyways. And rebellion is partly because they feel the need to take charge of their own life and try to do what they want to do of course because they want to do what they all think they're friends are doing.
Besides if teens never went through this crazy stage where the kids and parents don't get along and with contention etc, would parents be able to let their kids ever leave home? I doubt it! (It'd be too hard to let go)

Because they are in between being a child and an adult. They want to make sense of who they are and it's normal for them to have some emotional moments. If their parents aren't very understanding that will push them into rebellion.

like every generation that goes by this happens. its the perception that they are rebellious b/c as each generation goes by, the previous one does not understand the sucessor. Culture and environment is another cause,
specifically and unique to the American culture.

Basically, they begin to question the rules imposed on them. This is good and necessary. However, many teenagers are too stupid to figure out the purpose of these rules until they've messed up big.

Expressing their individuality. They are trying to find out who they are. Hormones play a part in this too, the things have gone haywire. Peer pressure and such.

It's a natural part of development - they're asserting their own opinions and independence. They need some space to do this, but need guidance and boundaries as well.
