Yes, at this time some tough love is called for. Without it, and some rules, what kind of message are they sending to the younger siblings? It will be tough, but no one ever said bieng a parent was easy.

Well, at least she's trying to get some stability now. That might mean she can be appealed to in terms of what it would mean to her baby if she gets a GED--that she can learn things she will need to know when the baby gets older and enters school, so she won't be embarrassed around other children's parents and she'll be better able to help with homework and whatnot.

this sounds like a tough situation.I think the 17 yr. old needs to get her priorities straight.I also think that a parent will get better results by supporting and encouraging because this is tough for her too.I became a mom at 17 too.I didn't have babysitters very often and it took me longer to accomplish things, but knowing that my mom didn't call me names and encouraged me instead.People praised me for how well I took care of my apartment and my baby and eventually that helped me build confidence and I have made progress.good luck!

Not to insult you, I wonder if there were some warning signs when she was younger...as they get older it's harder to punish them or change them. I'm starting to think it's time for tough love.
