There is no status limitations. If a person is killed in order to satisfy an agenda, or to get them out of the way it is considered an assassination.

I think you have to be able to find at least 1000 people in at least 5 different states of at least 3 different races that liked you...
then you are considered "assassinated"..
If only your mama can id you, and half the neighborhood hates you and only one race knows you, you were basically killed.
If you are a cop, you are "slain"
If you are a parent or a young woman with an honest job..I think you are murdered.
Homicide is a word that is usually only used by law enforcement.

History would lead me to believe that assassination is used to refer to the murder of a political figure, and the reason being political and not personal.
