Ethanol is ethyl alcohol. "alcohols" is a class of chemicals with somewhat similar properties due to certain similarity in molecular structure: they all have an (-OH) group.
As I said ethanol is alcohol, it is the alcohol that we drink, formed from fermentation of sugars.
methanol, or wood alcohol is very toxic and should not be ingested.
isopropanol is the "rubbing alcohol" that we buy in pharmacy or drug store, and and should not be injested. There are many others. Most come in mixture with water and other substances.
Important thing is: ONLY ETHYL ALCOHOL, OR ETHANOL, CAN BE INJESTED!!!

Ethanol is alcohol. There is denatured ethanol which has had poison added to keep people from drinking it without paying the alcohol tax to the government. The alcohol we most frequently refer to as booze has not had poison added to it and is consumable, to a point. The ethanol we hear about for fuel has been denatured with about 2% gasoline, by volume.

Ethanol is a drinkable form of alcohol. It's the component in alcoholic beverages that get you drunk. Some pure, scientific grade ethanol isn't drinkable only b/c the chemical companies put an additive that will make you sick if you do consume it. I think it's there to keep the scientists honest and prevent them from becoming alcoholics on their employers' dime. ;)
