Sunsets and sunrises. The smell of night-blooming jasmines. Knowing that someone in the world misses you terribly. The ability to express yourself. The perfect night's sleep. Laughter. Hope. Seeing a place you've been to a million times in a brand new light. Being surprised by people. Common courtesy. The blessing of a beautiful daydream. The list goes on. :)

The air you are breathing right now, the continually changing beauty of sunrises and sunsets, a harvest moon, a shooting star, a child's laughter, a parent's praise, a first kiss, a true friend, a rainbow, rain, snow, the smell of freshly mown grass, the smell of an orange when you first cut it, the smell of a watermelon when you first cut it, seeing a baby take it's first step, holding your new born baby, doing something nice for a stranger like holding the door for them and getting a smile with a thank you in return, watching a butterfly, playing with your dog, swimming on a hot day, watching fireworks, building a snowman, crying while watching a really good movie, laughing too, someone letting you get ahead of them in line, getting a Valentine, someone remembering your birthday that you didn't expect to, autumn, seeing the fields being harvested, seeing Christmas decorations, well, you get the idea now don't you?

Fresh air, sunlight on water, icicles, nature in general, a cool breeze when it's hot, toes in the sand, finding surprises that are nice, being with a good friend and not having to talk, an open full hearted smile of your child or grandchild, a smile from a stranger who is not wanting something from you, a good joke, the feeling you get from doing a good job, your first kiss, kittens or puppies playing, beautiful music and art can also be free sometimes, a good night's sleep

Judging by your picture (if that's YOU in the picture where your avatar would be), you are both beautiful and a "serious-thinker" with a sense of "sadness" in your eyes. And even the question you present us with carries a sense of one who is searching. To me, and I have no idea where that quaint little saying originated from... that the best things, are things that are both recieved AND given freely in the things of "love". If this is true (and I believe it applies to most ), then, yes, the best things in life ARE free.

I don't know, but, "you can keep them for the birds and bees, I want money. Yeah, that's what I want. That's I want, that's what I want."

I love that song, but anyway, I digress, the answer is really up to each person to decide on their own. To some it will be friendship, love, religion, honesty, trust, pride, humility, gratitude, health, life, nature, anything and everything you think and feel. Just my opinion.

Best, like good, is relative. Someone might say that air is good, but someone else might find it annoying that we require it, or that it is rapidly becoming highly polluted, or wish that it would go away so that we would all die. Someone else might say that sex is good, but others might say that it provides too much temptation to do wrong, too much pain, too much disease... In the end, everyone has their viewpoint. The question is not what is best, but what will you decide to make use of?
