A business man I hardly even knew not only got me a job in the auto parts business at age 17, then a year later, asked me to join him as a full partner in his own major auto parts business; then, when I told him I was planning to go get a 4-year college degree at a technical college, he offered to put me through school if I needed some help. Well, during my second year of college, I found I did need $750 to tide me over. He had to ask me my name to write out his personal check. Two years later, when I graduated and became a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, the first two pay checks I earned went directly to Mr. D. L. McPeek with a grateful thanks for his faith in me--for whatever reason he might have had. I still have no idea why he picked me, but I have picked others to help ever since. Perhaps that is why he did that for me, because he must have seen some attributes in me and thought I would do the same in my own time.

Ironically enough it was one of the simplest things that meant the most. I was on a family trip to Los Angelos when our rental van broke down in the middle of the five lane highway. I am from Arkansas and was not prepared to be honked at while trying to push the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. About two hours later (this was before everyone had a cell phone) a man stopped and offered us help. He had a phone and we were able to contact the car rental company. The funny thing was...he was from Ohio. Is it impossible to find a helping hand in Los Angelos? Here, in Arkansas, in two hours time (depending on traffic) approximately 60 people would have stopped and offered assistance.
