No. When people call babies, precious, that is just what they meant - that those babies are such precious blessings. Nothing more, nothing less. Do not believe your friend. I do not think that's true. :)

Yes, precious is the PC word to use for an ugly baby. The older generation sees all babies as precious, cute or ugly... so don't go by their comment (they already know that beauty is only skin deep). It's the rest of us, the younger generation, that is still hooked on image and looks. I've done it (when put on the spot by the parents)... and so have many others. If the baby is cute... we say what a cute or gorgeous baby. If the baby's ugly, we say precious. But you know what, sometimes, it's the ugly babies (yes folks, there are some ugly babies and you know I'm right) that grow up to be a knockout.

I don't think that you should be getting too much advice from your "friend." I call babies precious all the time, and I never used the word as an alternative to saying that the baby was ugly. It is simply not true.

I don't use the word "precious" because I do think that's a way of getting around the issue of an ugly baby. I'll just say "How sweet!" or "What a pretty smile!" or something to that effect...My cousin was a fugly baby and she turned out pretty well!!

I don't think there is any such thing as an ugly baby. Every baby is beautiful to someone. And they are all precious.

Your friend sounds very shallow. Precious is a tender word. It's usually said with love.
