This was originally recorded by Los Angeles band The Leaves in 1965. Their lead singer was bassist Jim Pons who joined the Turtles just before they recorded their Happy Together album. (thanks, Rick - Lafayette, NJ)
It is unclear who wrote this. Many people believe it was written by Chester Powers (aka Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service), but Hendrix himself - and also The Leaves - attribute it to William (Bobby) Roberts. No one has been able to copyright it, so the song is considered "traditional," meaning anyone can record it without paying royalties. (thanks, Gary - Thetford, England)

A songwriter named "Billy Roberts" wrote this song. Jimi Hendrix is the best known artist to cover it, but there is an early punk version by a group called "The Leaves," a garage band from the 1960's, and a super campy version by Cher from the early 1970's also worth checking out!

Tough question! I had to go to Wikipedia for the answer. It was apparently written by a Billy Roberts and copyrighted in 1962. The most famous version of the song was by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Billy Roberts or Dino Valente (Quicksilver Messenger Service)? Hendrix had a great version but I think Roy Buchanans was better.
