I am going to Philadelphia this week with a few friends and I was wondering if anybody could suggest what are the good sights to see and what we could pass on.

Well, it depends on what you're looking for.

Start with Googling the heck out of Philly...I've lived here for 8 years and I still find interesting stuff that way. Also, check out the Philadelphia Weekly, the CityPaper, the Metro and phlly2night.com.

There's obviously a ton of history in Philly, and while it's definitely not all in one area, there's a concentration of it in Center City, especially as you head towards the River...Old City, Society Hill, Independence Mall, etc.

There are plenty of tours, including one...I think it's called the Big Bus...it's a double decker bus that I see ALL OVER the city, so I'd guess that it's a pretty extensive tour. It will be hotter than heck this week though...today (7/17) it's supposed to reach 100, and it gets humid around here, so be ready and pack plenty of light clothes. At least with that double decker bus, the top level is open air, so maybe you can catch a breeze that way.

You may just want to go to the tourist center at Independence Mall. That should be the best bet because they'll cover every kind of thing you'd like to see, not just the Independence Mall, Constitution kind of things.
