So, do identical twins have identical fingerprints? The basic answer is NO. Identical -- or monozygotic -- twins form when a single fertilized egg splits in two after conception. Because they form from a single zygote, the two individuals will have the same genetic makeup. Their DNA is virtually indistinguishable. However, fingerprints are not an entirely genetic characteristic. Scientists love to use this topic as an example of the old "nature vs. nurture" debate. Fingerprinting, along with other physical characteristics, is an example of a phenotype -- meaning that it is determined by the interaction of an indivdual's genes and the developmental environment in the uterus. The ultimate shape of fingerprints are believed to be influenced by environmental factors during pregnancy, like nutrition, blood pressure, position in the womb and the growth rate of the fingers at the end of the first trimester. Thus, you will find similar partterns of whorls and ridges in the fingerprints of identical twins. But there will also be differences -- just as there are differences between the fingers on any individual's hands.

DNA has nothing to do with fingerprints, other than genetic ones. I have identical twin nieces. My Dad is an identical twin. Both my Dad and Uncle have the same DNA. My nieces have the same DNA. Fingerprints, however, are like snowflakes. No two are the same. EVER! There is now some research into the prints of our ears. It seems that they, too, are unique. Another area that is being looked into is the iris of the eye. Maybe we are more "fearfully and wonderfully made" than we ever imagined.

DNA is a molecular trait. Twins sharing the same DNA can still grow at different rates, have different metabolic rates, inherit separate medical problems. Fingerprints are a growth pattern trait.

Example Tree rings, two trees the same age, same amount of rings, the difference is the thickness of the rings due to Light, water, and Fertilization differences between the two.

Put briefly, and hopefully, succinctly as well as understandably, the DNA can be almost identical; however, perfectly identical DNA overlooks the differing nutritional gains by each, environmental differnces, etc. Think about the FACT that one twin newborn is inevitably larger and one smaller , sometimes, but rarely, mortally so.
In the same way, we have documented, that even the length of the umbilical cord, the "twine" of the cord and the placenta, perhaps, can have altering affects to something as small as differences b/t fingerprints! God bless your search into Science and Creator. Often they coincide and mesh; sometimes they do not.
Faith is more difficult than scientific proof , I understand ; but then, He has given MUCH to keep us fascinated and inquisitive ... down to the atom.

Simply put, DNA isn't the only determinant. Environmental factors, and even random fluctuations during development may create the different fingerprints.

Because fingerprints are not entirely the result of genetics. They are partially influenced by environmental factors during pregnancy, like nutrition, blood pressure, positionin the womb, growth rate of the fingers.
