It started to feel achy right above the kneecap about 2 weeks ago, and gradually got worse so that now if I shift it funny the pain shoots either up my thigh or down my shin. Also, it hurts more at the end of the day, and if I put pressure on the back of my thigh(like when I get up off a chair) it feels like someone is trying to break my thigh bone! I have to be careful with it,like I can't run around or swim, but it doesn't just hurt all the time. Just if I shift fuunny or put pressure on certain spots, then it's really a sharp, quick pain! I have no idea how it started.

I have a similar problem with my knee. In my case once or twice a year this happens to me, usually if I have been working on my knees(roofing). I feel it shift at the time and its not painful but later, oh man it hurts. Mine pain goes just below the knee at the top of the shin and travels up to the knee, it also feels stiff and is tight. Severe pain if i try to bend it and while walking when my knee goes back too far like a hyperextention. The last three times this has happened it took me 3 to 4 days to feel normal again. My history on this knee is 23 years ago it was banged up during football practice maybe a slight hyperextention, but didnt bother me much. Later in life I was exercizing with a stair machine and had the pain come back. Doctor said I was building up more muscle on my outer thigh than my inner thigh which was causing the knee cap to shift. My advise is if you hate doctors like me or are economically inable to fix the knee you can try using a knee brace with magnets in it and use some motrin for the pain. So far it has worked for me as it eventually goes away after a couple of days. But I know this is only a temporary fix as some day this might not work and my only option will be the doctor. hope you can get some relief . Joe

If you didn't injure yourself prior to the pain then i would estimate that a chiropractor may need to give you an adjustment. make sure he xrays first and shows you what the problem is on the xray. You'll understand what's wrong and with a couple of adjustments (in most cases) you should be good as new. If you haven't gotten good exercise lately, ask the chiropractor what you can do to strengthen the muscles in that area. they'll give you specific and safe exercises for it. by the way, sleeping "wrong" or even just sneezing can cause bones to move from their correct positioning. Left unchecked, it could cause other things to "get out of place."

See a sports Dr- it could be a ligament tear, a bone chip or a bruise. Better to know so you can fix it and not let it become something permanent. You only get 2 knees, you know...

Definitely see a doctor (orthopedist). You should get that checked out very soon so it doesn't get worse. I've been told that knee pain from an injury is one of the most painful.....take care of yourself!!

Get to a doctor. Why are you waiting? Pain is the body's way of telling you something is wrong.
