Lots of reasons, but most involve pulling a trailer full of crap they don't need, like jetskis or snowmobiles which only get used once a month in season. Overall, it's a matter of the sheep following the advertising. The auto companies make about 4 times as much money selling an SUV as they do selling a regular car, so they advertised the heck out of them, with all the lizard brain button pushing that that entails. People do (regardless of how honorable you think our brains are) what the scientifically designed brain controls tell them to do. When they spend so much time watching TV that they have few original thoughts, then you can expect such things.
Yes, I owned an SUV for a while after an accident where 2 kids had 3 broken legs in a small car. Then I switched back to a car when my paranoia slackened a little. SUV's are safer if you don't speed. Less safe if you do, like any car.

Well we got a SUV because we have 2 kids in car seats and I felt that I was too young (I'm 26) to be driving a van. Also I am scared to drive a car because I nearly died a few years ago when a car pulled out in front of me when I was only about 35 feet from him and going 55 mph. I could not stop and ended up going through the windshield of my car. No more cars for me!

SUV's combine the practical uses off having a truck or van...with the luxury of an automobile...and room for the kids. In some circles, they are a status symbol.

Not only that. They drive their SUV to work downtown and park it in a yuppie garage and never get dirty. So why the SUV?

SUVs are for driving in rough terrain. Not like glass carriages.

I know a few people who have suburbans and expeditions and they bought them because they feel "safer" than in a regular size car. I don't really agree that they are safer, but hey if thats how they feel then they have the right to buy the gas guzzlers.

I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I live in Massachusetts and receive a fair amount of snow thanks to the Great Lakes I love skiing and driving far in snow. It's to bad that you can't afford one and thank you for not driving one. I'm not as concerned about my baby when teenage girls pass me on a cell phone.

Dead Deer fit perfectly in the back.

Well, some people buy them to haul their kids around, but others buy them to accommodate big egos. I hate them (SUVs). They're the ultimate insecure-male or big-family vehicle, very dreary in either case.
