it starts beneath you and over you from the ground to space

The sky refers to the apparent dome we see when we look up. It contains anything from the insect buzzing above our head to galaxies billions of light years away. It looks like a sphere because our eyes capture the environment as to how far away and up it is; we can't perceive the distance of the object (except for different apparent sizes).

We can never reach the sky as it is always above us. But according to Native American myth, a long time ago, there were trails up into the sky, so that one can easily go to the sky, during the times that animals could speak.

The sky starts within your mind, if the sky is infinite then one is unable to conceive the sky in relation to time and space with language.
Language as Chomsky suggest is an instinct, and instincts
are ancillary to natural knowledge to help guide our way in natures measure of existence, the sky has no beginning or end, so it seems, perhaps another illusion, we think because we have mind that we can know how to explain, we know very little, we suppose we know truth when in fact we invent ideas as truth ..

What auriga said - though that's the atmosphere. But the "sky" is the bright coloured thing above your head, and colour is only seen where there is water vapour, so that definition will do for me.
