Hi! I am doing a research paper on the media and their relationship with the police departments. Do you believe that the news that the media gives the public, influences the public views on police departments and other public offices? Do you believe the media can influences the negative thoughts public has on police in general? What is your opinion about police in general? What is your opinion about the media? Please share. Thanks!

I think you should change the title of your question. Public opinion of police and media sources are different than police / media relationships. But, since you asked;

Television Media responses to major police activities generally try to sensationalize the story, shock & awe the viewers, over dramatize the bravery or ineptitude of the officers involved and over publisize the event to profit from the ratings. Hurricane Katrina is a good example, another is the Rodney King incident.

Newspapers tend to be more accurate, more truthful and more detailed when reporting the news. One reason for this is because the newspaper editior and reporters are more interested in informing the public than they are to becoming a national celebrity on TV.

Police departments would probably dance with joy if the media was barred from asking a police offer questions or interviewing crime victims and criminal suspects until after they've completed their investigations. All too often it is the media that makes it impossible for the accused to get a fair trial, or for a jury verdict to stand against the pretrial publicity.

Here's what I think about police in general. They're human, they have emotional responses to tradedgy, violence, provocations, dealing with stupid people and vicious dogs. They can be unreasonable, unresponsive and vindictive at times. Fortunately, most of them can control their emotions when dealing with the public.

I believe that the media doesn't influence the police dept. at any means, if anyone knows more about a particular case is the police the media on goes by judgement or what they are told, which isn't what the real story is. i hate the media i think that they fabercate stories and don't know what they are even talking about half the time, the police dept works very hard to take care of cases but can be very lazy at times as well. and last but not least yes i think the media does influence the public on how they view the police and other public offices, the media is like a drug and people feed on them for there info which most of the time is not correct.

The media is a huge way to controll the peoples opions about political figures and the political figures are aware of this that's why they spend millions close to billions on campaigns that distort their opponents campaign. the media such as CNN and Fox pick what they want to public to see and feel about one issue and this has a large impact on the general public such as the war in which we are in.
