I know when they're first born it's really just gas when they smile. When do they start smiling for real and when are they supposed to start holding their head up by themselves?? My baby is a week and a half old and at about 4 or 5 days old she was trying to hold her head up and now can get it up but just has trouble keeping it up for a while. Is that normal?

Actually your baby is totally normal and could be ahead of the game. It won't take too much longer for her to have the strength and coordination to hold her head up for longer periods of time. As for the smiling, I don't know anyone who smiles when they have gas:) But my baby smiled at me for real around two months. You'll know when she smiles at you. Don't let anybody tell you it's just gas. Motherhood is about 5% outside information and about 95% just the two of you working things out together. Enjoy every milestone and unless there is cause for concern try not to compare to other moms and babies!

Usually the real smile comes at 2 to 3 months and they usually are able to hold their heads up at 2 to 4 weeks just all depends on the baby

I don't buy the gas stuff. My baby smiled at three days, I swear by it. You can see it in their eyes. Why would gas make you smile? Makes no sense. They even have pictures from 3-D ultrasounds of babies smiling in the womb. They don't have gas in there.

It's normal for a newborn to have trouble holding up their head. My daughter would lift her head up off my shoulder for a few seconds at a time when she was only a few days old, but it was a few months before she had good control over that noggin.

Yes, that is normal. Babies are just like toddlers, they don't really follow anyone's schedule, but their own. I think that when they smile, it is really a smile, I don't believe the gas thing. The reason I say that, is because, they usually smile in response to someone. Gas wouldn't always happen when they are interacting with family or friends.

It is normal for your baby's head to be wobbly like that. It takes a while for their muscles to have the strength to hold their heads steady. As for the smile, I think when a baby, no matter how old, looks you right in the eyes and smiles, it's not gas, it's her way of saying she is glad to see your face.

You may know it, but that doesn't make it true!! Very young babies smile instinctively when they are *content*, not in pain!! As for when a baby smiles intentionally, average (see sources section below) is 1-3 months.

The parenting books and such will tell you 6-8wks, but every baby is different.

Some can hold their head up from birth. They say 2-4 weeks for this.
