I assumed you have scratched you head and said dam. So you completed the first step. Do the terminal cleaning at the battery ( There are also terminals at the starter which should be cleaned. Wire brush any stud bolts to remove dirt remove nuts gently so as not to turn the stud bolts. Reassemble.) The ideas of checking to see if the headlights are bright is a good way to test the battery after cleaning the battery terminals. You can check an alternator with a thin feeler Gage. On the back of the alternator there should be a small bump on the back of the case about the size of a quarter. With the motor running (When you get that done) place the wide edge of the feeler Gage an inch from the bump. Move it towards the bump. If the Gage is drawn towards the bump the alternator it is working. (Watch the fan belts) You can also check the negative lead where it attaches to the frame. Remove it and clean the frame and lead. If you have the after market battery terminals where the cable is under a clamp with two bolts on each side. Remove the bolts, metal bar, and clean cable and clamps and clean. None of this will do any good if you battery is dead.

No noise means that the problem is elecrical; starting with the battery. Remove the two terminals, clean them really well;make sure the battery has juice in it. If you just hear a click after that, then the problem is likely the starter, or the solenoid (connected to the starter).

After that, things qwould get more compicated. But check the batery really good for now...

how old is your car? do you live near a canal? LOL if serious only revert to the starter, it's electrical. i have a mini cooper and my silent alarm shuts the system down. i'm a girl, don't know heavy duty mechanics but know about start ups! call AAA or ask a friend or a neighbor if you don't have AAA to help you out.

Dead Battery or bad starter switch. Test the battery first... If you can't jump it, it's probably the starter. Usually pretty inexpensive and easy to replace.

Dead battery or a bad connection to battery. May need cleaning. Alternator could be bad, and it will not charge the battery.

Light work?
Horn honks?
Anything else run by the battery working?

If yes, dead starter.

If no, dead battery, bad battery cable, corroded battery terminals....

etc....

If the ignition key is missing, I'm not amused.
