Scan for adware, spyware and viruses. If clean, go to Disk cleanup and remove unnecessary temp files. Then Defrag the disk. If that doesn't work..you can either try to stop some programs from loading when Windows starts, or add more memory. XP should have at least 512 mb to run decently.

Check your manufacturer, or visit http://www.CoastMemory.com . At CoastMemory, you can look up how much your computer takes and get the MAX. If you get memory that does not work, they will be happy to accept the returns and help you find what will really work.
Keep in mind that if you have 4 slots for memory, they usually have to be installed in identical pairs. So you might just seek memory to replace ALL that you have.
If you are running Windows 98, you should get 128MB.
If you have Windows 2000, try to expand to 512MB
If you are running Windows XP, try to expand to the MAX, or 2GB.
Keep your own Anti-virus up to date, and check the status regularly.
Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an upexpected pop-up.
Download and install FireFox free from http://www.mozilla.com This is a browser that is safer to use than IE. Use this for general surfing and google searching. Only use IE when you MUST have IE, such as Windows Updates.
If you have Windows XP with SP2, activate the Windows firewall and check the status. If you don't, get Zone Alarm the free version from http://www.zonelabs.com
Take these steps to keep your computer ALIVE.

go get system mechanic and clean the it.it should check everything out.if u see advance options u can delete every old file,or files which were stuck in hdd will be deleted.even after the clean if ur system is slow then remove the background programs that start during booting.
and still ur sys sucks then go get some ram which is compatible with ur sys .even if that fails then ur hdd is probably the big problem.

You need more RAM. You can buy stick of RAM at computer store, not too expensive, maybe $35. You just have to open your computer box and find out what kind of RAM you need, take out the stick and take it to store with you.

It would help if you provided the RAM you are currently running. Yes it does sound like you do not have enough.
