Hey, I'm at the campus right now. Downtown is the dangerous area. The college campus is relatively safe, and you'll see security everywhere, so that's always a good sign.
If you ever drive from Homewood to the Med Institution (where I work) you'll see the "unsafe" parts.

You can look at crime mapping (well, in 14-day chunks) by neighborhood at http://141.157.54.34/bpdmaps/police.htm
JHU's main (Homewood) campus is in the Northern district. Abell, Charles Village, Guilford, Hampdon, and JH Homewood are all neighborhoods near campus. Most of those seem relatively safe, but it might be a good idea to compare if you're looking for a place to live. Charles Village south of 27th St. or so doesn't look so great.
Areas around the med school might be a different story; I've heard it's worse.

It's plenty safe. I have a buddy that lives in the area with his wife. It's mostly busy working stiffs and such. If you get off the main drag, there are a few run down areas, but I would not classify them as unsafe.
But then again, I'm Doctor Evil. No one is safe around me. Wherever I am, people will classify the area as unsafe, unlivable, and radioactive. So as long as I'm not visiting my friend, you'll be fine.
Muahahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Wow, the section around UCLA is tough? it is a techniques from it. UCLA is wedged between Bel Air and Santa Monica (extra or much less). it is surrounded with the aid of wealthy families, boutiques and celebrities. UCLA PD is likewise everywhere. USC is in a coarse community as human beings generally get robbed and in specific situations stabbed... no longer kidding. U of Chicago is a touch tough community, yet they have the biggest private police stress interior the international (i think of 2nd to the King of Jordan?). many do no longer think of U of C is in a coarse section, yet I only individually do. Berkeley is a shifty section. i did no longer like it very plenty because of the fact i replace into observed with the aid of some homeless human beings at one component. additionally, various the department stores close early so it is complicated to get something late at night. UC San Diego has a very superb surrounding section. Very family, suburban and wealthy. The coastline is completely a stone's throw from the campus (you will see that the coastline from Muir and the different faculties on that component, yet no longer from Earl Warren's component). MIT sits in Harvard sq., so it is a touch superb section. in spite of the shown fact that it is somewhat city and that i don't understand roughly "risk-free", if it is your challenge. I genuinely have visited all of those faculties individually and that i picked UCLA because of the fact I enjoyed the campus and our environment the main. i'm going to be a touch biased, yet I won't communicate for the different faculties because of the fact i did no longer see them. certainly, in case you may locate the money for it or have the time, I recommend you notice the places your self. no longer something is somewhat like vacationing the campus because it gives you a thoroughly distinctive sense.

A friend of mine went there and tells horror stories about things that happened off campus. Campus itself was safe enough but the surrounding area is not. Be very careful. Do not go out alone.
