Tracy Ullman is funny. That chick with the red hair is funny. Ellen Degeneres. And that's like the end of it. No other female comedians are funny. Women are never witty. Everybody knows plenty of guys who are funny. I do not know one woman who is. Once is a great while I will hear a woman make a geniunely funny comment. I mean, those are like memorable occassions. Even if you think that there are more funny female comedians than I do, funny women are still as rare as conjoined twins. (At least conjoined twins are funny !).
Say what you want about my chauvanism or whatever - but you can't argue that the numbers are anywhere near equal.
(Any comedian - male or female - whose act consists primarily of heckling the opposite sex does not count as a comedian, for purposes of our analysis).

If you a Kafka / Edgar Allan Poe wannabe - who tries to make a virtue of being cynical - and is not nearly profound as you think you are - please pass on this question - whether or not you think your avatar image is intense and menacing to others.

Well, I happen to think it's quality over quantity. Just because men have more comedians doesn't mean they are funnier. I mean, there are some male comedians that I don't find funny at all. Their material sucks! Just because women might not be as numerous in the comedian-industry does not mean we are not funny! Hell, I'll take a few women who can make me laugh or many men who can't make anybody laugh or get people to laugh out of sympathy! And, by the way, opinions are like a**holes, everybody's got one!!!

An interesting question and my husband totally agrees with you. I think that there are more funny women comedians than you do, but that is because men and women have different senses of humor. I would also argue that men are more "traditionally funny" because they have been accepted in that role for so much longer. Women fifty years ago would not have really tried to do stand up ( I know there are exceptions) and if they did they were looked down up on for it. I think it is a social thing and a gender thing.

On the whole men are more humor oriented in general, and women are not entirely encouraged to be funny. It's not seen as an entirely feminine trait. Oh, and to the person who said women don't like vulgar- do you listen to the BS that comes out of your mouth? These days women like it more than men!
And to stay a step ahead of you, don't you go start blaming men for that too!

Depends on your definition of "funny." You are right, there aren't very many women comedians because they just don't really care to seek the 'limelight' (not that there is anything wrong with it if they do.) Lots of women can be fun/funny, too, but you will find them enjoying laughs in everyday situations in normal places, not necessarily on stage :>

To be funny must to have more than a beautiful body. There is a difference between beauty and grace. And the grace is that which makes us to feel better around a person. The grace makes to be funny.

I think it's partially because women who are really poignantly funny (and not just cutesy or playing towards a vastly female crowd) arn't thought to be very alluring or feminine by most people so it's avoided.

Women challenge men to win their trust by men showing they have wit and an unstressed spontaneous side which comforts women. Since women can't protect themselves as well physically their trust is won by a male who shows he can express himself in a nonthreatening way.

Most humor is stupid and most women aren't stupid.
Most humor is vulgar and most women aren't.
Most humor pokes fun at people/things (make them "the butt" of a joke) while lots of women are compassionate and sooner not put someone down.
Most humor has a "us vs. them/me against the world" element to it while most women prefer peace and togetherness.
A lot of male comedians strive to do great impersonations; a lot of women strive to be comfortable as themselves.
Somehow, a lot of men saw "Can't we all just get along?" as funny; most women regarded that as a valid question.
Bottom line, all of this is garbage: as a male, you relate more to male comedians and therefore find them funnier. That simple, really.
